A framework that C.A.L.M.S

Clarity, Alignment, Leverage, Momentum, Support — five things that turn a business you're running on instinct into one you're running on purpose.

Most business owners can tell you what's in the bank. Far fewer can tell you why. C.A.L.M.S is how we change that — a structured way of understanding your numbers well enough to make better decisions, and then making sure those decisions actually happen.

    CLARITY

Knowing what's actually happening, and why it matters.

There's a difference between having numbers and understanding them. Most businesses have plenty of numbers. What they don't have is the story those numbers are telling.

We look at the handful of numbers that genuinely drive your business, what's really happening with your cash, and how you compare with businesses like yours. Then at what's possible — because there are five levers in any business that move profit and cash, and most owners are pulling one or two of them.

    ALIGNMENT

Pointing your finances at where you're actually going.

What is the business for? Not what does it do — what is it for. Something to sell, something to hand on, or something that runs without you so you can have your Fridays back. That answer changes every financial decision you make.

We agree the destination first, then work backwards. What has to be true about your profit, your margin and your cash to get there. What needs to change, and in what order. You end up with a plan that has steps in it, not a document that sits in a drawer.

    LEVERAGE

Getting more from what you already have.

Most businesses don't need more. They need more from what they've already got. Your systems, your people, your processes — all of it is capable of producing more than it currently does.

So we look at where work is being done twice, what's being keyed in by hand, and how long it takes you to find out how last month went. Then at your margins — because in almost every business there's a customer or a service everyone assumes is doing well, and when you work it through, it's being carried by the rest.

    MOMENTUM

Making sure it actually gets done.

The plan isn't the hard part. Everybody has a plan. The hard part is month seven, when it's busy, and the thing you promised yourself you'd do in January is still sitting there.

So we meet every month. What's been done, what hasn't, what the numbers say, and what needs changing — because things move, and a plan that can't move with them isn't much use. It isn't complicated, but it works, for a simple reason: somebody is expecting an answer.

    SUPPORT

Not making the big calls on your own.

Running a business can be a lonely job, and the financial decisions are the loneliest part of it. There usually isn't anyone to ask.

Four times a year we go deep — where the business is, what's changed, and what the next twelve months look like now rather than what we thought back in January. And in between, there's the phone call when something lands: a customer wanting terms you're not sure you can afford, a bank asking questions, someone offering to buy the business.

    This isn't for everyone

C.A.L.M.S works when these are true. If two or more of them aren't, we'll say so — and point you somewhere better suited.

    • Turnover above £1m and growing, or a credible plan to get there within two years
    • A real destination in mind: scale, sale or succession
    • Cloud bookkeeping already in place, or a willingness to move to it
    • Willing to meet every month and be held to the actions agreed
    • Willing to share the numbers openly, including the uncomfortable ones

    Investment

C.A.L.M.S starts from £18,000 a year, excluding VAT, on a twelve-month initial term with a ninety-day review point. Two payment options are available.

Statutory accounts, tax returns, payroll, VAT and bookkeeping are quoted separately, so you only pay for what you need.

The right figure for your business depends on what we find. We'll always put both the advisory and the compliance fee in writing before you commit to either.
